Divine N Promise: A Difficult Journey

Divine and Promise are fictional characters drawn from a compilation of numerous life stories that youth have shared with the author over the years. These main characters are teenage twins of African American descent. Divine is the girl and Promise is the boy. The characters of Divine and Promise bring forth different perspectives based on gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, and other real life experiences. Often times their road is rough, but love is the underlying repair mechanism for the entire series.

Divine N Promise Series

Beginning with the first volume, Divine N Promise: A Difficult Journey, the twins set out to tell their amazing story.

In reflecting on their 17 years of life experiences we are introduced to their teenage parents in Chapter One: Teen Decisions Stay with You for Life.

The twins are raised in the “projects.” Their parents work hard to change the financial conditions of the family. However, tragedy prevails in Chapter Two: A Hard Way to Learn the Value of Money.

In Chapter Three: A Lost Childhood, the twins are forced to face many challenges. They are torn apart, but must remain strong to survive their ordeal.

At different stages the twins come to terms with their situation. They try to make the best out of what is left in their lives. To this end, they accept their white stepfather. Chapter Four: Finding Oneself Through It All, is a testimony to the love and obedience they felt toward their parents.

Chapter Five, Realizing the Bigger Picture: One Race -The Human Race, teaches us about the appreciation of difference. Divine and Promise must embrace a new family and lifestyle to remain together. The new family, a combination of black, Hispanic, white, and biracial members, travel to South Africa for an eye-opening experience.
